If those family names sound familiar to DeSmog readers, they should: we have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/scaife-family-foundations\" target=\"_blank\">a profile in our database for Scaife<\/a>\u00a0and have written fairly extensively about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/7682\" target=\"_blank\">Olin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/7685\" target=\"_blank\">Bradley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mayer devoted some 60 pages of the 380-page tome to the three\u00a0families.<\/p>\n<p>More than just a profile of those families and their influence in shaping policy, the pages also serve as a primer on the historical roots of the 501(c)(3) non-profit system itself and how and why plutocratic interests pushed the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Congress to create it to begin\u00a0with.<\/p>\n<p>Self-interest, Mayer meticulously documents, played a central role.\u00a0But that&#8217;s a long and vital history lesson for another\u00a0day.<\/p>\n<p>For now, here are some of the most compelling details about a few of the families not named Koch probed by Mayer in \u201cDark\u00a0Money\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scaife, \u201cLeague to Save Carthage\u201d and\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ALEC<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the center of the Scaife story is Carthage. \u00a0Yes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carthage\" target=\"_blank\">Carthage of the north African variety<\/a>,\u00a0sort\u00a0of.<\/p>\n<p>In 1964, Richard Scaife\u00a0\u2014 namesake of the Scaife Family Foundations, whose money came largely from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_Oil\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf Oil<\/a>\u00a0fortune \u2014 helped create a group called the\u00a0League to Save Carthage, harkening back to the city\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carthage#Roman_Carthage\" target=\"_blank\">conquered and colonized by the Roman Empire<\/a>\u00a0now situated as a suburb of Tunis,\u00a0Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beyond Koch: Meet the Other Right-Wing Oligarchs Featured in Jane Mayer&#8217;s &#8220;Dark Money&#8221; The shenanigans of the \u201cKochtopus\u201d have garnered most of the headlines \u2014\u00a0including here\u00a0\u2014 pertaining to reviews of New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer&#8217;s new book,\u00a0Dark Money.
