{"id":16731,"date":"2016-01-20T13:59:15","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T18:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16731"},"modified":"2016-01-20T13:59:15","modified_gmt":"2016-01-20T18:59:15","slug":"tomgram-bill-mckibben-the-real-zombie-apocalypse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16731","title":{"rendered":"Tomgram: Bill McKibben, The Real Zombie Apocalypse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomdispatch.com\/blog\/176092\/tomgram%3A_bill_mckibben%2C_the_real_zombie_apocalypse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tomgram: Bill McKibben, The Real Zombie Apocalypse<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"title\">Here we are just a couple of weeks into 2016 and we already know that last year was the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/december-heat-boosts-2015-to-2nd-warmest-year-in-u-s-history1\/\" target=\"_blank\">second-warmest<\/a>\u00a0on record in the continental United States (the winner so far being 2012); the month of December was a U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2016\/01\/07\/after-record-shattering-december-u-s-has-its-second-warmest-year-in-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">record-breaker<\/a>\u00a0for heat and also precipitation; and it\u2019s assumed that, when the final figures come in later this month, 2015 will prove to be the hottest year on record globally. Even before this news is confirmed, we know that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/feb\/02\/14-15-hottest-years-record-2000-un-global-warming\" target=\"_blank\">14<\/a>\u00a0of the 15 warmest years on record have occurred in the twenty-first century which, at least to me, looks ominously like a pattern. And\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/dec\/17\/2016-set-to-be-hottest-year-on-record-globally\" target=\"_blank\">early expectations<\/a>\u00a0are that this year will top last, with the help of a continuing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-monster-el-nino-idUSKBN0TR2BN20151208\" target=\"_blank\">monster El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>\u00a0event in the overheating waters of the Pacific that has only added to the impact of global warming and to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/dec\/27\/uk-floods-and-extreme-global-weather-linked-to-el-nino-and-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">fierce weather<\/a>\u00a0around the world. Everywhere it seems increasingly possible to see the signs of climate change: the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/news\/item\/34276-the-melting-arctic-s-dramatic-impact-on-global-weather-patterns\" target=\"_blank\">melting Arctic<\/a>; the destabilizing ice sheets in both the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/antarctic-coast-meltdown-could-trigger-ice-sheet-collapse-1.18688\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2015\/10\/27\/world\/greenland-is-melting-away.html\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland<\/a>; the already\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2015\/05\/sea-level-rise-accelerating-faster-thought\" target=\"_blank\">rising sea levels<\/a>\u00a0that are someday destined to submerge\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/12\/21\/the-siege-of-miami\" target=\"_blank\">major coastal cities<\/a>; the disappearing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/report\/item\/glacier_loss_raises_high_concern_over_water_supplies_20150603\" target=\"_blank\">glaciers<\/a>(and so, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/climatenewsnetwork.net\/andes-tropical-glaciers-going-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\">some regions<\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0endangered water supplies); monster typhoons; severe droughts; and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/news\/item\/34431-2015-wildfires-burned-a-record-breaking-10-1-million-acres\" target=\"_blank\">burning<\/a>\u00a0that goes with a globally\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Environment\/2015\/0803\/California-Rocky-Fire-why-it-fits-a-global-trend\" target=\"_blank\">expanding fire season<\/a>; the &#8212; in a word &#8212;\u00a0<em>extremity<\/em>of it all.<\/div>\n<div class=\"meat\">\n<p>With 2015 in the history books, it\u2019s easy enough to think of our changing weather as part of that history, but that would be a mistake. Climate change, if allowed to come to full fruition, will be something else altogether &#8212; not history, but the possible end of it.
