The devil shops local<\/a><\/h3>\n
Veterans of this blog may recall that some time ago I had a\u00a0fascinating discussion<\/a>\u00a0about the \u2018balance of nature\u2019 with a curious fellow who turned out to be none other than the devil himself. Well, blow me if I didn\u2019t meet him again as I journeyed home from the Oxford Real Farming Conference. He was sitting in a shadowed corner of the train carriage, hunched over a thick pile of papers and books, but unmistakeably my old friend Nick. We had another very interesting conversation so I thought I\u2019d write it down as well as I can remember it and publish it here:<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

Chris: Hello Nick! Long time no see\u2026<\/p>\n

Nick (shielding his papers with his arms): Shhh! Don\u2019t let anyone know who I am.<\/p>\n

Chris: Oh, sorry. The devil in disguise, huh? What are you reading there?<\/p>\n

Nick: As a matter of fact I\u2019m looking at some very interesting findings, and between you and me I don\u2019t think you\u2019re going to like what they have to say\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris: Oh yes? How so?<\/p>\n

Nick: Well, it turns out that this local food thing that you\u2019re so into isn\u2019t all it\u2019s cracked up to be.<\/p>\n

Chris: Is that so? Who says?<\/p>\n

Nick: Well, for starters there\u2019s\u00a0this very interesting book<\/a>\u00a0by a chap called Leigh Phillips.<\/p>\n

Chris: Oh god.<\/p>\n

Nick: Look, I do read your blog, you know. I realise that you\u2019re not exactly Mr Phillips\u2019 biggest fan. But it\u2019s not just him. Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams (S&W) say much the same in\u00a0this new book<\/a>\u00a0of theirs. And even someone that I know you rate very highly has written a sniffy article about local food.<\/p>\n

Chris: Who?<\/p>\n

Nick (triumphantly):\u00a0George Monbiot<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Chris: Oh god.<\/p>\n

Nick (grinning malevolently): You see? Just admit it, you\u2019re onto a loser with this one.<\/p>\n
