The rhetorical responses were swift, but\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: underline; color: #1f589a;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ase.tufts.edu\/gdae\/policy_research\/resolving_food_crisis.html\" target=\"_blank\">policies and practices have changed little<\/a>. That is in part because they relied on the tried-and-failed solution of increasing commodity food production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 0px;\">Agribusiness led the charge, with dire warnings about unsustainable population growth and looming resource constraints. How can we produce enough food to feed this growing population?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 0px;\">\u201cBetween now and 2050, we need to double the food supply,\u201d said Robert Fraley, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Monsanto, during an interview with\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: underline; color: #1f589a;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thetakeaway.org\/story\/transcript-monsanto-exec-takes-gmo-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Public Radio\u2019s Takeaway host John Hockenberry.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s probably the greatest challenge facing mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em 0px;\">Indeed, that was the theme of this year\u2019s World Food Prize event, which took place October 15\u201317 in Des Moines, Iowa.
