\u201cThe United States of America, right now, has the strongest, most durable economy in the world,\u201d said President Obama, in his State of the Union address,\u00a0on Tuesday\u00a0night.\u00a0 What performance metrics he based his assertion on is unclear.\u00a0 But we\u2019ll give him the benefit of the doubt.<\/p>\n

Maybe this is so\u2026right now.\u00a0 But it isn\u2019t eternal.\u00a0 For at grade, hidden in plain sight, a braid of positive and negative surface flowers indicate an economic strike-slip fault extends below.\u00a0 What\u2019s more, the economy\u2019s foundation dangerously straddles across it.<\/p>\n

\"1-gdpnow-forecast-evolution\"Actually, it probably\u00a0isn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0so \u2013 the Atlanta Fed\u2019s GDP Now measure, which has proven surprisingly accurate thus far, indicates that the US economy is hanging by a thread \u2013 and the above chart does now yet include the string of horrendous economic data released since January 8.<\/p>\n

Something must slip.\u00a0 A massive vertical rupture is coming that will collapse everything within a wide-ranging proximity.\u00a0 It is not a matter of if it will come.\u00a0 But, rather, of when\u2026regardless of what the President says.<\/p>\n

Here at the Economic Prism we have no reservations about the U.S. \u2013 or world \u2013 economy.\u00a0 We see absurdities and inconsistencies.\u00a0 We see instabilities perilously pyramided up, which could rapidly cascade down.\u00a0 We just don\u2019t know when.<\/p>\n

Comprehending and connecting the infinite nodes and relationships within an economy are beyond even the most intelligent human\u2019s capacity.\u00a0 Cause and effect chains are not always immediately observable.\u00a0 Feedback loops are often circuitous and unpredictable.\u00a0 What is at any given moment may not be what it appears.<\/p>\n

Not Without Consequences<\/strong><\/p>\n

For instance, the Federal Reserve quadrupled its balance sheet following the 2008 financial crisis, yet consumer prices hardly budged.\u00a0 Undeniably, the Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019 consumer price index is subject to gross manipulation.\u00a0 We\u2019re not endorsing the veracity of the CPI.<\/p>\n
