Prominent US linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky has lashed out at Turkish President Recep Erdogan, who has accused him of being \u201cdark\u201d and having \u201cmentality of colonialism\u201d for signing an open letter protesting Ankara\u2019s military op against the Kurds.<\/div>\n

The spat was provoked by an open letter to Turkey\u2019s leader signed by some 1,128 Turkish and foreign academics from 89 universities around the world, including Noam Chomsky and Immanuel Wallerstein. It was published last month under the title:\u00a0\u201cWe won\u2019t be a part of this crime.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The academics\u2019 criticism of Ankara\u2019s military operation in Turkey\u2019s Kurdish southeast infuriated Erdogan, who lashed out at Chomsky in particular.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet our ambassador from the United States invite Chomsky, who has made statements about Turkey\u2019s operations against the terrorist organization,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Erdogan said at the 8th annual conference of the Turkish ambassadors that started on Monday. He offered to\u00a0\u201chost\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Chomsky in the Kurdish region.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I decide to go to Turkey, it will not be on his invitation, but as frequently before at the invitation of the many courageous dissidents, including Kurds who have been under severe attack for many years,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Chomsky told the Guardian via e-mail in response to Erdogan\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n

The philosopher also accused the Turkish leader of hypocrisy and applying double standards to terrorism, as well as openly aiding terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n
