CNN\u2019s Barbara Starr, as she always does, immediately went on the air with Wolf Blitzer to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/01\/12\/politics\/10-u-s-sailors-in-iranian-custody\/\">read what U.S. officials told her to say<\/a>: \u201cWe are told that right now, what the U.S. thinks may have happened, is that one of these small boats experienced a mechanical problem \u2026 perhaps beginning to drift. \u2026 It was at that point, the theory goes right now, that they drifted into Iranian territorial waters.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-wrap align-center width-fixed\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2016\/01\/starr.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-article-medium wp-image-47847\" src=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2016\/01\/starr-540x464.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It goes without saying that every country has the right to patrol and defend its territorial waters and to intercept\u00a0other nations\u2019 military boats that enter without permission.\u00a0Indeed, the White House itself last night was clear that, in its view, this was\u00a0\u201cnot a hostile act by Iran\u201d\u00a0and that Iran had given assurances that\u00a0the sailors would\u00a0be promptly released. And this morning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/jan\/13\/iran-releases-us-navy-boat-crews-who-entered-territorial-waters-state-tv\">they were released<\/a>, exactly as Iran promised they would be, after Iran said it determined the trespassing was accidental and the U.S. apologized and promised no future transgressions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of this, most U.S. news accounts last night quickly skimmed over \u2014 or outright ignored \u2014 the rather critical fact that the U.S. ships had \u201cdrifted into\u201d Iranian waters.
