Humans? Not much better, as we share a world engulfed by television. And the deeper our immersion becomes, the less likely it seems we\u2019ll poke our heads above the surface and see there must have been life before someone invented TV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.4rem 0px;\">Those are the opening words of a recent\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-transition-property: all; -webkit-transition-duration: 0.1s; -webkit-transition-timing-function: ease-in-out; -webkit-transition-delay: initial; color: #27a3d1; text-decoration: none;\" title=\"Farnsworth article\" href=\"http:\/\/fredericksburg.com\/News\/FLS\/2006\/082006\/08252006\/214490\">Associated Press piece<\/a>\u00a0on the little known history of the television and its inventor Philo Farnsworth. Far from being a household name like a Thomas Edison or an Alexander Graham Bell, Farnsworth lived and died in relative obscurity in regards to being recognized as the inventor of television.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.4rem 0px;\">Unlike the flat screen LCD and plasma televisions that are all the rage today, the no-longer ubiquitous cathode ray-tube-based television (those bulky TVs with the big bulge at the back) is based on an idea of Farnsworth\u2019s whereby a series of combined horizontal lines would produce an image.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: #000000; font-weight: 400; line-height: 1.2; font-family: 'Roboto Slab', Times, serif; font-size: 2.4rem; margin: 0px 0px 1.6rem 0px;\">A dollar sign of things to come<\/h3>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.4rem 0px;\">The first demonstration by the self-taught inventor came in 1927 at the age of twenty-one when he transmitted the image of a single line to a receiver in the next room, while the first image ever transmitted was, lo and behold, a dollar sign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 2.4rem 0px;\">Illuminating factoids aside, what particularly interests me is the locale in which Farnsworth first got his idea.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;\">&#8211; See more at: http:\/\/transitionvoice.com\/2014\/11\/lemminged-to-be-herded-off-the-peak-oil-cliff-by-filmmakers\/#sthash.fLfBjNZu.dpuf<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even good television leaves viewers passive and isolated \u2014 Transition Voice. \u201cFish don\u2019t know they\u2019re living in water, nor do they stop to wonder where the water came from.
