The Senate\u2019s bill, passed last month, just before the holidays, is particularly restrictive. The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act \u2014 named, ironically, for the New Jersey senator who supported strong environmental protections \u2014 would make it much harder for states to regulate chemicals after the EPA has evaluated them, and would even prohibit states from acting while the federal agency is in the process of investigating certain chemicals.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post-body\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-outer\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1\">\n<div class=\"GridContainer\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0\">\n<div class=\"GridRow\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-inner\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0\">\n<div class=\"PostContent\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0.1\">\n<div data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0.1.$p-0\">\n<p>The Senate\u2019s version has some significant differences from the House bill \u2014 the TSCA Modernization Act, which passed in June \u2014 and the reconciliation process is now underway. If the worst provisions from both bills wind up in the final law, which could reach the president\u2019s desk as soon as February, the new legislation will gut laws that have put Oregon, California, Maine, Vermont, Minnesota, and Washington state at the forefront of chemical regulation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-wrap align-none width-auto\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2016\/01\/bottles.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-article-large wp-image-47531\" src=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2016\/01\/bottles-1000x666.jpg\" alt=\"Plastic baby bottles and dishes, close-up\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Plastic baby bottles, sippy cups, and bowls. Photo: Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Toxic Sippy Cups and Baby Bottles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For Mike Belliveau the passage of Maine\u2019s chemical law in 2008 felt like the crowning moment in his career. The environmental advocate had spent years working on the Kid Safe Product Act, which is one of the strongest protections against dangerous chemicals in the country.
