{"id":16199,"date":"2016-01-08T11:47:43","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T16:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16199"},"modified":"2016-01-08T11:47:43","modified_gmt":"2016-01-08T16:47:43","slug":"study-finds-the-era-of-climate-science-denial-is-not-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=16199","title":{"rendered":"Study Finds The &#8216;Era of Climate Science Denial Is Not Over&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2016\/01\/07\/study-finds-era-climate-science-denial-not-over\" target=\"_blank\">Study Finds The &#8216;Era of Climate Science Denial Is Not Over&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10201 node node-blog view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/coan%20study%20fig3.jpg?itok=rTPy9kxM\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">\n<div class=\"horizontal-share-left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"horizontal-share-right\">Conservative think tanks in the United States are a sort of \u201cground zero\u201d for the production of doubt about the links between fossil fuel burning and dangerous climate\u00a0change.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>These think tanks produce reports, hold conferences, write books, go on television, produce columns and blogs and generally and liberally splatter the public discourse with talking\u00a0points.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have heard their manufactured doubt everywhere. \u00a0\u201c<span class=\"caps\">CO<\/span>2 is great for the planet\u2026 fossil fuels are good\u2026 climate scientists are wrong\u2026 the world has been hotter in the past\u2026 cutting emissions will kill the economy.\u201d That sort of\u00a0thing.<\/p>\n<p>But there has been speculation that as the world continues to break heat records, and as oceans rise and the science sends ever more clear and urgent signals, that the focus of these think tanks will shift away from attacking the science to discussing\u00a0policy.<\/p>\n<p>Now a new study published in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959378015300728\" target=\"_blank\">Global Environmental Change<\/a>\u00a0has declared unambiguously \u201cthe era of climate science denial is not\u00a0over\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Travis Coan, of the University of Exeter, and Dr Constantine Boussalis, of Trinity College Dublin, analysed 16,000 articles, reports, transcripts, letters, reviews and press releases from the websites of 19 conservative think tanks, mainly based in the U.S, who work on climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, Boussalis and Coan discuss how commentators had been speculating about an end of climate science denial for more than a\u00a0decade.<\/p>\n<p>Analysing documents from 1998 until mid-2013, Boussalis and Coan found that think tanks had in recent years been focusing less on policy and more on attacking the\u00a0science.<\/p>\n<p>In a blog post for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/planet-oz\/2016\/jan\/07\/era-of-climate-science-denial-is-not-over-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a>, Coan told\u00a0me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In our view, meeting the challenges posed by organized climate skepticism requires accurate and systematic information on what these organizations are saying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Study Finds The &#8216;Era of Climate Science Denial Is Not Over&#8217; Conservative think tanks in the United States are a sort of \u201cground zero\u201d for the production of doubt about the links between fossil fuel burning and dangerous climate\u00a0change.
