The Deceptive Debate Over What Causes Terrorism Against the West<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ever since members of the UK Labour Party in September elected Jeremy Corbyn as party leader\u00a0by a landslide<\/a>, British political and media\u00a0elites have acted as though their stately manors have been invaded by hordes of gauche, marauding serfs. They have waged a relentless and undisguised war to\u00a0undermine Corbyn\u00a0in every way possible<\/a>, and that includes \u2013 first and foremost \u2013 the Blairite wing of his\u00a0party, who have\u00a0viciously maligned him<\/a>\u00a0in ways they would never dare do for David Cameron and his Tory followers.<\/p>\n

In one sense, that\u2019s all conventional politics: establishment guardians never appreciate having their position and entitlements threatened by insurgents, and they are thus uniting \u2013 Tory and Labour mavens\u00a0alike \u2013 to banish the lowly intruders from their Oxbridge court (class and caste loyalty often outweighs supposed ideological\u00a0differences). Corbyn\u2019s reaction to all of this is also conventional\u00a0politics: he quite reasonably wants to replace his\u00a0Blairite shadow ministers who have been vilifying\u00a0him as a Terrorist-loving extremist\u00a0with those who are supportive of his agenda, a perfectly\u00a0rational\u00a0response\u00a0which the British media is treating\u00a0as proof<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0he\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0cultish Stalinist tyrant<\/a>\u00a0(even though\u00a0Blairites, when they controlled the party,\u00a0threatened to de-select<\/a>\u00a0left-wing MPs who failed to prove\u00a0sufficient loyalty to Prime Minister Blair). In response to the\u00a0dismissal of a couple of anti-Corbyn ministers yesterday<\/a>,\u00a0several others Labour MPs have announced their protest-resignations with the gestures of melodrama\u00a0and martyrdom at which banal British politicians excel.<\/p>\n

Rather than wallow in all that\u00a0internal power jockeying of a former world power, I want to focus instead on one specific argument that has arisen as part of Corbyn\u2019s cabinet \u201cre-shuffling\u201d because it has application far beyond Her Majesty\u2019s realm. One of the shadow ministers replaced yesterday by Corbyn is a total mediocrity and non-entity named Pat McFadden.<\/p>\n
