Time to Start Paying Attention: Why Saudi Arabia Might Pull the US into Another War<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

(<\/b>ANTIMEDIA<\/b><\/a>)<\/b>\u00a0After Saudi Arabia executed prominent Shi\u2019ite cleric, Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr, and 46 other people, protesters\u00a0stormed<\/a>\u00a0the Saudi embassy in Tehran on Saturday, ransacking and setting fire to the building and its contents. In a surprise\u00a0response<\/a>\u00a0the following day, Saudi Arabia announced it would sever diplomatic ties with Iran \u2014 giving Iranian diplomats 48 hours to evacuate, while recalling its own diplomats back from Iran.<\/div>\n

\u201cThis Saudi-Iranian sudden and acute crisis is a very worrisome development, and we must at all costs avoid that it produces a chain of violent consequences in the region,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0warned United Nations mediator, Staffan de Mistura,\u00a0in an email<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0New York Times<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very disturbing escalation,\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0said Michael Stephens, an analyst with the Royal United Services Institute research center in London, according to the\u00a0Times<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt has enormous consequences for the people of the region, and the tensions between the two sides are going to mean that instability across the region is going to continue.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

On Monday, three Sunni-led nations \u2014 Bahrain, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates joined the Saudis in\u00a0breaking or greatly reducing<\/a>\u00a0diplomatic relations with Iran.<\/p>\n

Despite prior international calls to grant the outspoken cleric clemency \u2014 and sharp warnings from Iran of dire consequences should the execution be carried out \u2014 the al-Saud monarchy pushed ahead with its message via mass execution, ironically intended to quash possible violence against the State. As promised, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei\u00a0issued a sharp rebuke<\/a>\u00a0condemning the execution of al-Nimr, published on his official website:<\/p>\n

\u201cDoubtlessly, this innocent martyr\u2019s blood, which was spilled unjustly, will quickly show its effect and the\u00a0<\/i>divine vengeance will befall the Saudi politicians.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
