Climate change\u00a0could lead to significant declines in electricity production in\u00a0coming decades as water resources are disrupted, said a study\u00a0published on Monday.<\/p>\n

Hydropower stations and thermoelectric plants, which depend\u00a0on water to generate energy, together contribute about 98\u00a0per cent of the world’s electricity production, said the study\u00a0published in the journal Nature Climate Change<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shifts in water temperatures, or the availability of fresh\u00a0water due to climate change, could lead to reductions in
\nelectricity production capacity in more than two thirds of the\u00a0world’s power plants between 2040 and 2069, said the study from\u00a0an Austrian research centre.<\/p>\n

“Power plants are not only causing climate change, but they\u00a0might also be affected in major ways by climate,” said Keywan\u00a0Riahi, Director of the Energy Program at the International\u00a0Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).<\/p>\n

“(Due to) climate change it will be increasingly difficult\u00a0to provide reliable services at affordable costs,” Riahi, one of\u00a0the study’s authors, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.<\/p>\n

Hydro, nuclear, fossil\u00a0fuel plants\u00a0affected<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hydropower plants rely on water to move turbines, while\u00a0thermoelectric plants, including nuclear and fossil-fuel based\u00a0generators, need fresh water to cool their systems.<\/p>\n
