It won\u2019t go away until temperatures drop and fresh water from the north spilling out from the Mississippi moves through the\u00a0area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dRed tides produce neurotoxins that affect not only marine life, but humans who can breathe it in when it is aerosolized by wave action,\u201d Jennifer Hecker, director of natural resource policy for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, wrote on a social media post about the fish kill. \u201cSome scientists believe exposure can contribute to human nervous disorders such as Parkinson\u2019s\u2026not just an\u00a0eyesore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although red tides are a natural occurrence along the Gulf Coast, they don\u2019t occur in the winter. The record-breaking temperatures and\u00a0less than average rainfall\u00a0have\u00a0created favorable conditions for the\u00a0red\u00a0tide.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Nutrients from fertilizer, human wastewater, and animal waste all contribute to increasing severity and duration of red tide events,\u201d Hecker\u00a0wrote.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/J46A8494-Edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Black drum fish pickup off the beach in Waveland, Mississippi. \u00a92015 Julie\u00a0Dermansky<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two days later I caught up with a crew as they hoisted large black drum fish into a Caterpillar vehicle following behind them.
