Google is Collecting Information on Public School Students \u2013 Here\u2019s How<\/a><\/h3>\n

As a new parent, the idea of sending my children to public school is a frightening\u00a0thought. The more you read, the more you realize the importance of extreme vigilance when it comes to what\u2019s happening at whatever place you send your\u00a0kids to for majority of their day. Quite often, parents are simply left completely in the dark about some very important matters.<\/p>\n

One such example relates to Google\u2019s penetration of\u00a0the U.S. public school system, and how the company employs a loophole in order to collect data on children. Google achieves\u00a0this by referring to itself as a \u201cschool official\u201d under the law. I truly wish I was making this up.<\/p>\n

From\u00a0the\u00a0Washington Post<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

Google is\u00a0a major player in U.S. education. In fact, in many public schools around the country, it\u2019s technically a \u201cschool official.\u201d And that designation means parents may not get a chance to opt out of having information about their children\u00a0shared with the online advertising giant.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The combined allure of Google\u2019s free suite of productivity tools and cheap laptops that use the company\u2019s Web-based ChromeOS operating system have made\u00a0Google\u2019s products\u00a0a popular choice at schools around the country.\u00a0And the company\u2019s growing dominance is\u00a0raising concern\u00a0from some privacy advocates<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0allege it is using some student data for its own benefit.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Google\u2019s\u00a0standard agreement<\/a>\u00a0for providing its education suite defines the company\u00a0as a \u201cschool official\u201d for the purpose of that student privacy law.<\/strong>\u00a0In Google\u2019s case, the company is providing software that districts might otherwise have to develop or support themselves, such as email services or tools that help students digitally collaborate on assignments.<\/em><\/p>\n

But schools are supposed to have\u00a0\u201cdirect control\u201d of how a company or individual uses and maintains education records to deem them a \u201cschool official,\u201d according to the department\u2019s regulation.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
