“Miracle of American Oil”: Continental Resources Courted Corporate Media to Sell Oil Exports<\/a><\/h3>\n

A\u00a0document<\/a>\u00a0published by the Public Relations Society of America,\u00a0discovered by DeSmog,\u00a0reveals that from the onset of its public relations campaign, the oil industry courted mainstream media reporters to help it sell the idea of lifting the ban on crude oil exports to the American public and\u00a0policymakers.<\/p>\n

Calling its campaign the \u201cMiracle of American Oil,\u201d the\u00a0successful<\/a>\u00a0PR<\/span>\u00a0effort to push for Congress and the White House to lift the oil exports ban<\/a>\u00a0was spearheaded by Continental Resources, a company known as the \u201cKing of the Bakken<\/a>\u201d shale oil basin and founded by Harold Hamm. Hamm\u00a0served<\/a>\u00a0as energy advisor to 2012 Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt\u00a0Romney.<\/p>\n

The campaign launched on December 16, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the\u00a0Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC<\/span>) oil embargo, and won the\u00a0prestigious\u00a0PRSA<\/span>\u00a0Silver Anvil Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the document, submitted to\u00a0PRSA<\/span>\u00a0to detail the logistics and reach of the\u00a0PR<\/span>\u00a0effort, it was \u201cdesigned to influence public policy and\/or affect legislation, regulations, political activities or candidacies \u2014 at the local, state or federal government\u00a0levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it all began with a kick-off dinner in\u00a0Washington,\u00a0D.C.<\/span>, hosted by Continental Resources and attended by some of the most influential mainstream media energy reporters in the United\u00a0States.<\/p>\n

Regular readers of the Washington oil and gas industry beat will find the names of the dinner attendees, disclosed in the document,\u00a0familiar.<\/p>\n
