Need a last-minute present? Stuck for some new year reading material? Then how about a thriller on a world in climate-caused turmoil?<\/b><\/div>\n

LONDON, 26 December, 2015<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 It\u2019s some time in the not too distant future. The American mid-west has turned into a dust bowl. Birds are dropping out of the sky. Cities are encapsulated in domes so that people can breathe clean, if recycled, air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Billions of refugees, victims of drought and famine, are on the move. The streets are full of violent gangs and human traffickers. Pandemics are breaking out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to a new literary genre \u2013 climate fiction, or cli-fi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of it might be sensational, some of it not exactly great literature, and some downright depressing, but there\u2019s little doubting cli-fi\u2019s growing popularity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cli-fi \u2013 along with its elder brother sci-fi \u2013 is now considered part of\u00a0modern literature\u2019s classification system<\/a>.\u00a0Though some titles make only a passing reference to climate change, while others are more concerned with murder, mayhem and sex than with global warming, others are more thoughtful, science-based works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Well-established novelists have used climate change as a backdrop in their books.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhether fictional or factual, the coming decades don\u2019t sound like a picnic. It\u2019s a scary scenario, and we\u2019re largely unprepared\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The prize-winning writer, Ian McEwan, in his 2010 novel\u00a0Solar<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>describes the world of physicist Michael Beard \u2013 a man of apparently insatiable sexual and culinary appetite \u2013 and his invention of a system for solving the global energy problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Margaret Atwood, the Canadian poet and novelist, has often used environmental catastrophe as a theme in her work: her trilogy\u00a0MaddAddam<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>graphically describes global floods and battles with criminals.\u00a0Ultimately civilisation \u2013 and the environment \u2013 is rebuilt.<\/span><\/p>\n
