{"id":15617,"date":"2015-12-23T12:31:35","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T17:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15617"},"modified":"2015-12-23T12:36:19","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T17:36:19","slug":"this-is-canadas-depression-surging-crime-soaring-suicides-overwhelmed-food-banks-and-the-worst-is-yet-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15617","title":{"rendered":"This Is Canada&#8217;s Depression: Surging Crime, Soaring Suicides, Overwhelmed Food Banks &#8220;And The Worst Is Yet To Come&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-12-23\/canadas-depression-surging-crime-soaring-suicides-overwhelmed-food-banks-and-worst-y\" target=\"_blank\">This Is Canada&#8217;s Depression: Surging Crime, Soaring Suicides, Overwhelmed Food Banks &#8220;And The Worst Is Yet To Come&#8221;<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"tabs\">Back in March, we brought you \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-03-11\/drugs-prostitution-violence-plague-oil-boom-towns-gone-bust\">Drugs, Prostitution, Violence Plague Oil Boom Towns Gone Bust<\/a>,\u201d in which we detailed the plight of towns like Sidney and Bainville, Montana, where the slump in oil revenue has made it all but impossible for local authorities to cope with surging crime rates that some attribute to the influx of oil workers the communities experienced in the good old days of high crude prices.<\/div>\n<div class=\"node sticky\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>The problem, apparently, was that despite the dramatic slump in oil, companies hadn\u2019t yet begun to cut jobs or slash capex and so, officials were left with less money to put towards policing their growing populations.<\/p>\n<p>As dangerous as it may be for small towns to experience exponential growth in what\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sf\/national\/2014\/09\/28\/dark-side-of-the-boom\/\">The Washington Post described<\/a>as \u201chighly paid oil workers living in sprawling \u2018man camps\u2019 with limited spending opportunities,\u201d\u00a0<strong>what\u2019s even more dangerous is the prospect that suddenly, the majority of those workers will be jobless.<\/strong>\u00a0That is, if there\u2019s anything that\u2019s more conducive to raising the crime rate than legions of highly paid young men living in small towns with \u201climited spending opportunities,\u201d it\u2019s legions of\u00a0<em>formerly<\/em>\u00a0highly paid young men stuck in small towns with limited\u00a0<em>job<\/em>\u00a0opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, America can look north to Calgary for a preview of what\u2019s in store for America\u2019s oil boom towns.<\/p>\n<p>Although Alberta\u2019s largest city bares little resemblance to Sidney and Bainville, the three do have one thing in common: oil. &#8220;Calgary boasted one of the lowest jobless rates in Canada as crude prices rose over $100 a barrel [but] it\u2019s now reeling after a global glut pushed prices down by two-thirds,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-12-23\/calgary-woes-spread-as-oil-patch-spending-cuts-deepen-in-2016\">Bloomberg notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user92183\/imageroot\/2015\/12\/CalgaryJobs.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user92183\/imageroot\/2015\/12\/CalgaryJobs_0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Is Canada&#8217;s Depression: Surging Crime, Soaring Suicides, Overwhelmed Food Banks &#8220;And The Worst Is Yet To Come&#8221;
