Though that is every bit as creepily terrifying as it sounds, citizens may still choose whether or not they wish to opt-in \u2014 that is, until the program becomes compulsory in 2020.\u00a0<i>\u201cGoing under the innocuous name of \u2018Sesame Credit,\u2019\u00a0<\/i><b><i>China has created a score for how good a citizen you are<\/i><\/b><i>,\u201d\u00a0<\/i>explains Extra Credits\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lHcTKWiZ8sI&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>\u00a0about the program.\u00a0<i>\u201cThe owners of China\u2019s largest social networks have partnered with the government to create something akin to the U.S. credit score \u2014 but,\u00a0<\/i><b><i>instead of measuring how regularly you pay your bills, it measures how obediently you follow the party line.<\/i><\/b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lHcTKWiZ8sI\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-post-ads\">In the works for years, China\u2019s \u2018social credit system\u2019 aims to create a docile, compliant citizenry who are fiscally and morally responsible by employing a game-like format to create self-imposed, group social control. In other words, China gamified peer pressure to control its citizenry; and, though the scheme hasn\u2019t been fully implemented yet, it\u2019s already working \u2014 insidiously well.<\/div>\n<p>Zheping Huang, a reporter for\u00a0<i>Quartz<\/i>, chronicled his own experience with the social control tool in October,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/519737\/all-chinese-citizens-now-have-a-score-based-on-how-well-we-live-and-mine-sucks\/\" target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<i>\u201cin the past few weeks I began to notice a mysterious new trend. Numbers were popping up on my social media feeds as my friends and strangers on Weibo [the Chinese equivalent to Twitter] and WeChat began to share their \u2018Sesame Credit scores.\u2019 The score is created by Ant Financial, an Alibaba-affiliated company that also runs Alipay, China\u2019s popular third-party payment app with over 350 million users.
