(Nancy Waugh\/CBC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>No one from Loblaw, the chain which owns Atlantic Superstore, was available to comment Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Dominion grocery stores, also owned by Loblaw,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/dominion-says-drought-and-exchange-rate-mean-higher-prices-short-supply-1.3373143\" target=\"_blank\">posted similar signs<\/a>\u00a0in Newfoundland this week.<\/p>\n<p>The price of groceries in Canada has risen by 4.1 per cent in the last year \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/Inflation cools to 1% in Canada even as food prices soar\" target=\"_blank\">faster than inflation<\/a>, according to a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/foodinstitute\/system\/files\/Food%20Price%20Report%202016%20English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">food price forecast by the University of Guelph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/food-prices-2016-1.3358980\" target=\"_blank\">7 foods that will cost you more in 2016 and why<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Canada imports 81 per cent of its produce, much of that from the U.S., which has had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/california-drought-to-squeeze-produce-prices-but-so-will-other-factors-1.3024691\" target=\"_blank\">variable weather and drought<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0last year. That problem has been compounded by a sudden, severe drop of the Canadian dollar last winter, largely due to oil, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers saw the\u00a0price of fruit jump\u00a0by 9.1 per cent and vegetables even more by 10.1, the report found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food prices &#8216;steadily marching up&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Annette d&#8217;Eon\u00a0picked up a few groceries at Quinpool Road&#8217;s Superstore Saturday afternoon.
