{"id":15329,"date":"2015-12-16T08:05:26","date_gmt":"2015-12-16T13:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15329"},"modified":"2015-12-16T08:05:45","modified_gmt":"2015-12-16T13:05:45","slug":"everyone-is-the-mother-of-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15329","title":{"rendered":"Everyone is the Mother of Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"gray postintro\">\n<div>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/bellacaledonia.org.uk\/2015\/12\/14\/everyone-is-the-mother-of-victory\/?platform=hootsuite\" target=\"_blank\">Everyone is the Mother of Victory<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<section class=\"postcontent content\">\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23952 alignright image-link\" src=\"http:\/\/bellacaledonia.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Bella-COP-illustration-which-way-eyerricks--414x600.jpg\" alt=\"Bella COP illustration 'which way' eyerricks\" width=\"414\" height=\"600\" \/>Everyone is the mother of victory; No one is the father of defeat.\u00a0Do we claim COP21 as a success, and risk watching it being used by fossil fuel failures to carry on burning humanity, and so become complicit in defeat?\u00a0Do we claim COP21 was a failure, and risk being the naysayers who didn\u2019t recognise the work needed to bring fossil fuels (instead of humanity) to an end?\u00a0This Loki-esque question about our motives, about our fears for how we might appear, may seem beside the point if the fundamental question is\u00a0<i>\u201cWas the COP a success or a failure?<\/i><i>\u201d<\/i>And there are screeds of excellent articles assessing the outcome of the Paris COP Agreement, the Agreement that is now the world\u2019s governments\u2019 roadmap for addressing climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">On the side saying it has been a failure, we have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/parisclimatejustice.org\/article\/climate-justice-groups-respond-paris-agreement\">Friends of the Earth<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecodered.org\/2015\/12\/a-paris-view-from-global-south.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=feed%253a+climatecodered+%2528climate+code+red%2529\">Climate Code Red<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/features\/web-exclusive\/2015\/12\/12\/cop21-paris-deal-epi-fail-on-planetary-scale\/\">New Internationalist<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kevinanderson.info\/blog\/the-paris-agreement-1010-for-presentation-410-for-content-shows-promise\/\">Kevin Anderson<\/a>, and a zillion other campaigning groups and scientists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/features\/web-exclusive\/2015\/12\/12\/cop21-paris-deal-epi-fail-on-planetary-scale\/\">New Internationalist<\/a>\u00a0describes the Paris deal as an \u2018Epic fail on a planetary\u00a0scale\u2019 (see their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/features\/web-exclusive\/2015\/12\/13\/21st-century-cop-out\/%20for\">cartoon history<\/a>\u00a0of climate negotiations) and conclude that, although \u201cThe Paris Agreement aims to keep the global average temperature rise to \u2018well below 2\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5\u00b0C\u2019\u201d in fact \u201cthe emission cuts contained in the agreement are based on\u00a0<i>voluntary pledges<\/i>\u00a0called \u2018Intended Nationally Determined Contributions\u2019 (INDCs) that governments\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/features\/2015\/11\/01\/paris-climate-talk-proposals\/\">drew up individually before the talks<\/a>, . . . [and] are going to lead us to 3.7\u00b0 warming of the planet.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/georgemonbiot\/2015\/dec\/12\/paris-climate-deal-governments-fossil-fuels\">George Monbiot<\/a>\u00a0superbly sums up the talks, saying:\u00a0\u201cBy comparison to what it could have been, it\u2019s a miracle.
