{"id":15197,"date":"2015-12-12T09:07:47","date_gmt":"2015-12-12T14:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15197"},"modified":"2015-12-12T09:07:47","modified_gmt":"2015-12-12T14:07:47","slug":"agreement-in-paris-paves-road-for-the-end-of-fossil-fuels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15197","title":{"rendered":"Agreement in Paris Paves Road For The End of Fossil Fuels"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/12\/12\/paris-agreement-paves-road-end-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\">Agreement in Paris Paves Road For The End of Fossil Fuels<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10144 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted desktop-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/23464393442_974de124c7_k.jpg?itok=AUZAgyXS\" alt=\"paris climate conference cop21\" width=\"826\" height=\"517\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"horizontal-social-bar horizontal-social-bar-top clearfix\">\n<div class=\"horizontal-share-left\">History was made today in Paris as the leaders of 195 nations agreed to an ambitious, science-based pact to move the world away from\u00a0the\u00a0fossil fuels that are to blame for the rapid increase in global\u00a0temperatures.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>After\u00a0two weeks of negotiations here in the airport hangars of Le\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_US\" data-scayt-word=\"Bourget\">Bourget<\/span>, 195 parties are expected to sign a global pact that will curb global warming pollution and rapidly escalate the growth of the clean energy solutions the world\u00a0needs.<\/p>\n<p>The consensus here is that the Paris deal on the table is a good one. Could it be better? Of course. But this deal is about as good as it is going to get from a consensus process involving 195\u00a0countries.<\/p>\n<p>The reduction targets in the plan are in line\u00a0with what scientists say needs to happen,\u00a0and\u00a0most\u00a0importantly\u00a0this deal\u00a0strikes a\u00a0balance between\u00a0what has to happen to avoid the most\u00a0calamitous\u00a0impacts of climate change,\u00a0with the\u00a0realties faced by\u00a0developing nations that do not have the resources to go it alone in reducing fossil fuel\u00a0consumption.<\/p>\n<p>On a personal note, having now been involved in this\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UN<\/span>\u00a0negotiating process in various capacities for close to a\u00a0decade, I have to say that this is truly an historic day for\u00a0humanity.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a very long road that started long before these talks here in\u00a0Paris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Long History of Climate\u00a0Negotiations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While this official\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UN<\/span>\u00a0process began\u00a021 years ago, it was in 1988 when a panel of scientists was struck called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_US\" data-scayt-word=\"IPCC\"><span class=\"caps\">IPCC<\/span><\/span>), bringing together everything we knew about climate change in a series of papers that would serve as the justification for a global treaty on greenhouse gas emissions.
