{"id":15170,"date":"2015-12-11T07:04:02","date_gmt":"2015-12-11T12:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15170"},"modified":"2015-12-11T07:04:02","modified_gmt":"2015-12-11T12:04:02","slug":"declassified-u-s-government-report-prepared-a-week-after-fukushima-accident-100-of-the-total-spent-fuel-was-released-to-the-atmosphere-from-unit-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15170","title":{"rendered":"Declassified U.S. Government Report Prepared a Week After Fukushima Accident: \u201c100% of The Total Spent Fuel Was Released to the Atmosphere from Unit 4\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/12\/declassified-u-s-government-report-week-fukushima-accident-100-total-spent-fuel-released-atmosphere-unit-4.html\" target=\"_blank\">Declassified U.S. Government Report Prepared a Week After Fukushima Accident: \u201c100% of The Total Spent Fuel Was Released to the Atmosphere from Unit 4\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\">We reported in 2011 that the International Atomic Energy Agency\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2011\/05\/iaea-knew-within-weeks-of-japanese-earthquake-that-reactors-had-melted-down-public-not-told-for-a-month-and-a-half.html\">knew within weeks<\/a>\u00a0that Fukushima had melted down \u2026 but failed and refused to tell the public.<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The same year, we reported in 2011 that the U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2011\/08\/us-knew-within-days-that-fukushima-had.html\">knew within days<\/a>\u00a0of the Fukushima accident that Fukushima had melted down \u2026 but failed to tell the public.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2012\/04\/nuclear-plant-35-miles-from-major-american-city-with-high-earthquake-risk-has-more-radioactive-cesium-than-released-by-fukushima-chernobyl-and-all-nuclear-bomb-tests-combined.html\">noted<\/a>\u00a0in 2012:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The fuel pools and rods at Fukushima appear to have \u201cboiled\u201d, caught fire and\/or exploded soon after the earthquake knocked out power systems. See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2011\/03\/nuclear-plant-operator-water-in-pool-storing-spent-nuclear-fuel-rods-may-be-boiling-an-ominous-sign-for-release-of-radioactivity.html\">this<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gbIuiAgBIgQ\">this<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/scienceinsider\/2011\/03\/contention-over-risk-of-fire-fro.html\">this<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/my.firedoglake.com\/kirkmurphy\/2011\/03\/15\/why-fukushimas-spent-fuel-rods-will-continue-to-catch-fire\/\">this<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/enenews.com\/nrc-spent-fuel-pool-4-dry-enough-lead-catastrophic-explosion-destroying-containment-pool-leakage-structural-damage-pool-area-exist-mar-29-foia\">this<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, a declassified report written by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 18, 2011 \u2013 one week after the tidal wave hit Fukushima \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pbadupws.nrc.gov\/docs\/ML1212\/ML12122A949.pdf\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The source term provided to NARAC was: (1) 25% of the total fuel in unit 2 released to the atmosphere, (2)\u00a0<strong>50% of the total spent fuel from unit 3 was released to the atmosphere,<\/strong>\u00a0and (3)\u00a0<strong>100% of the total spent fuel was released to the atmosphere from unit 4<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Fukushima.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52397\" src=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Fukushima-1024x725.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Fukushima-300x212.jpg 300x, http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Fukushima-1024x725.jpg 1024x, http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Fukushima.jpg 1138x\" alt=\"Fukushima\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a>NARAC is the the U.S. National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center, located at the University of California\u2019s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. NARAC \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/narac.llnl.gov\/\">provides tools and services that map the probable spread of hazardous material accidentally or intentionally released into the atmosphere<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>The fuel pools at Units 3 and 4 contained\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2012\/05\/senator-fukushima-fuel-pool-is-a-national-security-issue-for-america.html\"><em>enormous<\/em>\u00a0amounts<\/a>\u00a0of radiation.<\/p>\n<p>For example, there was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2012\/05\/senator-fukushima-fuel-pool-is-a-national-security-issue-for-america.html\">more cesium in that [Unit 4] fuel pool than in all 800 nuclear bombs exploded above ground<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Declassified U.S. Government Report Prepared a Week After Fukushima Accident: \u201c100% of The Total Spent Fuel Was Released to the Atmosphere from Unit 4\u201d We reported in 2011 that the International Atomic Energy Agency\u00a0knew within weeks\u00a0that Fukushima had melted down \u2026 but failed and refused to tell the public.
