{"id":15060,"date":"2015-12-07T07:44:56","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T12:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15060"},"modified":"2015-12-07T07:44:56","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T12:44:56","slug":"pbs-joins-the-msms-syria-russia-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=15060","title":{"rendered":"PBS Joins the MSM\u2019s Syria-Russia Bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/12\/05\/pbs-joins-the-msms-syria-russia-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\">PBS Joins the MSM\u2019s Syria-Russia Bias<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"entry-meta\">Mainstream U.S. media\u00a0systematically excludes points of view on world affairs that deviate from Official Washington\u2019s \u201cgroup think.\u201d With no lessons learned from\u00a0the\u00a0Iraq-WMD debacle,\u00a0the MSM\u00a0only lets on\u00a0establishment or right-wing pundits with conformist points of view on\u00a0crises with Syria and Russia, notes Rick Sterling.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>PBS Newshour<\/em>\u00a0is considered high-quality journalism by many North Americans. But is it? A test case is their report on Nov. 24 when a Russian jet was shot down and one pilot killed as he descended by parachute. This was a significant international event and the situation is still dangerous. The conflict in Syria could get even worse. PBS Newshour presented a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/how-the-turkey-russia-conflict-complicates-anti-islamic-state-efforts\/\"><u>discussion\/analysis of the event<\/u><\/a>\u00a0with two guests: Nicholas Burns and Angela Stent. The PBS Newshour host was Judy Woodruff.<\/p>\n<p>This critique applies to that one\u00a0<em>PBS Newshour<\/em>\u00a0broadcast but the essential points are true for much of what you see on the program (and across the mainstream U.S. news media). Assumptions and bias regarding the Syrian conflict are pervasive and persistent. So, how can U.S. foreign policy change (or even show some nuance) if the public is continually fed biased and false information from one point of view? Here are specific points:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/pbslogo.jpg?80e558\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8875\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/pbslogo.jpg?80e558\" alt=\"pbslogo\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014<em>PBS Newshour<\/em>\u00a0selected two analysts with essentially the same viewpoint, representing the U.S. government and military\/security establishment<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Burns is a former U.S. Ambassador to NATO. In early 2003 he urged the \u201cunity\u201d of NATO as some NATO allies expressed doubts about the U.S. the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, he urged punishing sanctions on Iran. In 2011, Burn\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerandpolicy.com\/2011\/10\/20\/libya-a-victory-for-nato-too\/\"><u>wrote,<\/u><\/a>\u00a0\u201cPresident Obama was surely right to commit the United States, however reluctantly, to the NATO campaign [to overthrow Libyan President Gaddafi]<em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Burns has a track record supporting Western aggression against other countries.
