This includes the highest detected level to date from a sample collected about 1,600 miles west of San Francisco<\/strong>. [Fukushima is a little more than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyzebra.com\/distance-calculator\/San%20Francisco-to-Fukushima.php\">5,000 miles<\/a>\u00a0from San Francisco. So this bit of radiation has already made it some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=1600%2F5000&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8#q=%285000+minus+1600%29%2F5000\">68%<\/a>\u00a0of the way from Fukushima to the West Coast of California] The level of radioactive cesium isotopes in the sample, 11 Becquerel\u2019s per cubic meter of seawater (about 264 gallons), is 50 percent higher than other samples collected along the West Coast so far, but is still more than 500 times lower than US government safety limits for drinking water, and well below limits of concern for direct exposure while swimming, boating, or other recreational activities. [However, the government\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2013\/04\/government-reacts-to-fukushima-radiation-crisis-by-raising-acceptable-radiation-standards-instead-of-fixing-anything.html\">raised allowable radiation levels<\/a>\u00a0after Fukushima \u2026 \u201cmoving the goalposts\u201d on what is safe.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/10\/world-health-organization-prolonged-exposure-to-even-low-level-radiation-increases-the-risk-of-dying-from-cancer.html\">A well-developed body of science actually says<\/a>\u00a0that no amount of radiation exposure is safe.]<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Through a citizen science sampling effort,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourradioactiveocean.org\/\">Our Radioactive Ocean<\/a>, that [Buesseler] launched in 2014, as well as research funded by the National Science Foundation, Buesseler and his colleagues are using sophisticated sensors to look for minute levels of ocean-borne radioactivity from Fukushima.
