{"id":14987,"date":"2015-12-02T07:32:17","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T12:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14987"},"modified":"2015-12-02T07:32:17","modified_gmt":"2015-12-02T12:32:17","slug":"near-boiling-point-on-global-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14987","title":{"rendered":"Near Boiling Point on Global Warming"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/12\/01\/near-boiling-point-on-global-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\">Near Boiling Point on Global Warming<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Rising global temperatures \u2013 if they exceed 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels \u2013 threaten to unleash havoc across the planet, including mass dislocations of desperate people that will make the current flood of Syrian refugees look like a tiny warm-up, writes Nat Parry.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>With more than 40,000 negotiators from 196 governments descending on Paris this week to negotiate a comprehensive accord to tackle climate change, it is hard to imagine that they could possibly reach an agreement that will satisfy everybody.<\/p>\n<p>The interests that each country brings to the table are so complex and diverse \u2013 especially when it comes to the touchy subjects of climate reparations and ensuring effective enforcement mechanisms for any sort of \u201cbinding\u201d deal on how to actually reduce carbon emissions to safe levels \u2013 it is inconceivable that everyone (or anyone) will feel content at the end of these marathon negotiations in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This is likely why the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a Costa Rican diplomat named Christiana Figueres, has for months been lowering expectations for the outcome of the summit.<\/p>\n<p>While the goal of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) has long been deemed necessary to avoid the most serious effects of climate change \u2013 a future of drowned cities, desertifying croplands, and collapsing ecosystems \u2013 Figueres acknowledges that the negotiations, based on the declared \u201cintended nationally determined contributions\u201d (INDCs) of each country at the table, will probably not result in reaching that 2-degree goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve already warned people in the press,\u201d she said this summer. \u201cIf anyone comes to Paris and has a Eureka moment \u2014 \u2018Oh, my God, the INDCs do not take us to 2 degrees!\u2019 \u2014 I will chop the head off whoever publishes that.
