{"id":14942,"date":"2015-12-01T16:45:26","date_gmt":"2015-12-01T21:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14942"},"modified":"2015-12-01T16:45:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-01T21:45:26","slug":"yes-turkey-is-buying-oil-from-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14942","title":{"rendered":"Yes, Turkey IS Buying Oil from ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/12\/yes-turkey-buying-oil-isis.html\" target=\"_blank\">Yes, Turkey IS Buying Oil from ISIS<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\">In response to Russia\u2019s accusation that Turkey is buying oil from ISIS, the Turkish president said that \u2013 if that is proven to be true \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.afp.com\/en\/news\/erdogan-says-would-resign-if-putin-oil-trade-claims-proven\">he\u2019ll resign<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>It turns out that Turkey\u00a0<strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0buying oil from ISIS.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/jul\/26\/isis-syria-turkey-us?CMP=share_btn_tw\">reported<\/a>\u00a0this summer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>US special forces raided the compound of an\u00a0<a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/isis\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Islamic State<\/a>\u00a0leader in eastern Syria in May, they made sure not to tell the neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>The target of that raid, the first of its kind since US jets returned to the skies over Iraq last August, was an\u00a0<a class=\" u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3084323\/US-special-forces-kill-ISIS-commander.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\"><strong>Isis official responsible for oil smuggling<\/strong>, named Abu Sayyaf<\/a>. He was almost unheard of outside the upper echelons of the terror group, but he was well known to Turkey. From mid-2013, the Tunisian fighter had been responsible for smuggling oil from Syria\u2019s eastern fields, which the group had by then commandeered. Black market oil quickly became the main driver of Isis revenues \u2013 and\u00a0<strong>Turkish buyers were its main clients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the oil trade between the jihadis and the Turks was held up as evidence of an alliance between the two.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the raid that killed Abu Sayyaf, suspicions of an undeclared alliance have hardened. One\u00a0<strong>senior western official<\/strong>\u00a0familiar with the intelligence gathered at the slain leader\u2019s compound said that\u00a0<strong>direct dealings between Turkish officials and ranking Isis members was now \u201cundeniable\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span id=\"more-52034\"><\/span><br \/>\nABC news Australia\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-12-01\/is-turkey-is-buying-oil-smuggled-by-islamic-state\/6991526\">points out<\/a>\u00a0today:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In June 2014, a\u00a0<strong>member of Turkey\u2019s parliamentary opposition<\/strong>, Ali Edibogluan, claimed that\u00a0<strong>IS had smuggled $800 million worth of oil into Turkey from Syria and Iraq<\/strong>, according to the Al Monitor website.<\/p>\n<p>He cited oil fields at Rumaila in northern Syria and others near Mosul in Iraq, saying that IS had laid pipes allowing it to \u201ctransfer the oil to Turkey and parlay it into cash\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, Turkey IS Buying Oil from ISIS In response to Russia\u2019s accusation that Turkey is buying oil from ISIS, the Turkish president said that \u2013 if that is proven to be true \u2013\u00a0he\u2019ll resign.
