Impacts of Turkey\u2019s Aggression against Russia. The \u201cTurkish Stream\u201d is Dead. Disruption of Gas Pipeline Routes to the EU. Russia\u2019s Economy in Crisis?<\/a><\/h3>\n
\u201cRegime change\u201d in Ukraine engineered by the US State Department was largely responsible for the collapse of the \u201cSouth Stream\u201d gas pipeline project. Washington\u2019s intent was to establish a de facto blockade which would prevent the flow of Russian gas to the European Union.\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n

\u201cThe South Stream gas pipeline<\/strong>\u00a0worth \u20ac15.5 billion\u00a0was intended to pump 67 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Europe annually.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The pipeline\u2019s underwater section 900 km (559 miles) long was intended to run along the bed of the Black Sea from the Russkaya compressor station on the Russian shore to the Bulgarian coast.\u201d (TASS, January 14, 2015)<\/em><\/p>\n

On December 1, 2014, President Vladimir Putin announced that the project to build the South Stream gas pipeline \u201cwas closed due to the European Union\u2019s unconstructive approach to cooperation,<\/strong>\u00a0including Bulgaria\u2019s decision [pressured\u00a0by the US] to stop the construction of the pipeline\u2019s stretch on its territory.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The South Stream was replaced by the \u201cTurkish Stream\u201d.\u00a0The scrapping of the South Stream was coupled with the signing in Ankara of a historic December 2014 deal between presidents Vladimir Putin and Recyyp Erdogan.<\/p>\n

Under the Russian-Turkish agreement pertaining to gas pipeline routes, Turkey was slated to become a major hub and transit route for the export of Russian natural gas to both Southern and Western Europe.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Gazprom in a historical announcement by CEO Alexey Miller in January 2015 confirmed that: The Turkish Stream gas pipeline project was considered\u00a0\u201cthe sole route<\/strong>\u00a0for Russia\u2019s future supplies of 63 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Western Europe\u2026 The Gazprom head made this statement in response to a question about the fate of Russia\u2019s South Stream gas pipeline project.\u201d (Tass, January 14, 2015)<\/p>\n
