But another option \u2013 financial sanctions on Saudi Arabia \u2013 might help\u00a0finally shut down the covert supply of money and arms to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, writes Robert Parry.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>As the Islamic State and Al Qaeda enter a grim competition to see who can kill more civilians around the world, the fate of Western Civilization as we\u2019ve known it arguably hangs in the balance. It will not take much more terror for the European Union to begin cracking up and for the United States to transform itself into a full-scale surveillance state.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, in the face of this crisis, many of the same people who set us on this road to destruction continue to dominate \u2013 and indeed frame \u2013 the public debate. For instance, Official Washington\u2019s neocons still insist on their recipe for \u201cregime change\u201d in countries that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/11\/09\/how-israel-out-foxed-us-presidents-4\/\"><u>they targeted 20 years ago<\/u><\/a>. They also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2014\/03\/02\/what-neocons-want-from-ukraine-crisis\/\"><u>demand a new Cold War with Russia<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in defense of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/11\/13\/carpetbagging-crony-capitalism-in-ukraine\/\"><u>a corrupt right-wing regime in Ukraine<\/u><\/a>, further destabilizing Europe and disrupting U.S.-Russian cooperation in Syria.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/saudiss-01.jpg?51b5ee\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14745\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/saudiss-01-300x200.jpg?51b5ee\" alt=\"King Salman of Saudi Arabia and his entourage arrive to greet President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Jan. 27, 2015. But most Republicans \u2013 from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/11\/18\/neocons-make-rubio-their-favorite\/\"><u>Marco Rubio<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to Carly Fiorina to Ted Cruz \u2013 only offer more\u00a0of \u201cmore of the same,\u201d i.e. neocon belligerence on steroids.
