{"id":14715,"date":"2015-11-24T07:32:58","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T12:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14715"},"modified":"2015-11-24T07:32:58","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T12:32:58","slug":"profound-political-disunity-is-now-pitting-rising-elites-against-fading-elites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14715","title":{"rendered":"Profound Political Disunity Is Now Pitting Rising Elites Against Fading Elites"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oftwominds.com\/blognov15\/political-disunity11-15.html\" target=\"_blank\">Profound Political Disunity Is Now Pitting Rising Elites Against Fading Elites<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><i>The American Power Elite may yet discover that\u00a0<i>throw the bums out<\/i>\u00a0applies to all existing Establishment parties and Elites.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>As I have often noted, historian Michael Grant identified\u00a0<i>profound political disunity<\/i>\u00a0in the ruling class as a key cause of the dissolution of the Roman Empire.<\/b>\u00a0Grant described this dynamic in his excellent account\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0760769990?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=charleshughsm-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0760769990\" target=\"resource\">The Fall of the Roman Empire<\/a>, a book I have been recommending since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The chapter titles of the book provide a precis of the other causes Grant identifies:<\/p>\n<p><i>The Gulfs Between the Classes<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Credibility Gap<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Partnerships That Failed<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Groups That Opted Out<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Undermining of Effort<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Today we focus on the rising\u00a0<i>profound political disunity<\/i>\u00a0of the Power Elites of the U.S.<\/b>\u00a0As a general observation, the largely theatrical polarization of the two political parties is being replaced by fault lines within each party and American society that no longer respect the ideological lines of Republican and Democrat.<\/p>\n<p><b>While conventional media pundits have observed the disorder in Republican ranks with more than a little\u00a0<i>schadenfreude (pleasure derived by someone from another person&#8217;s misfortune)<\/i>, relatively little attention has been paid to the equivalent fractures in the Democratic Party.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Longtime correspondent Mark G. forwarded an insightful article by Joel Kotkin that explains one of the key fractures:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/articles\/media-693109-news-tech.html\" target=\"resource\">Tech titans want to be masters of all media we survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In effect, the Old Left (currently represented by Bernie Sanders) is splintering from the mainstream\u00a0<i>Imperial Democrats<\/i>\u00a0(my term) of Hillary Clinton, while Kotkin&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Tech Titans<\/i>are pursuing a Libertarian-flavored dominance.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mark G. provides the analytic structure needed to understand why both parties are coming apart at the seams:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>What Kotkin describes here is best characterized as a civil war among Democratic Party Elites.
