Probe<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-10052 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"submitted mobile-only\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/Exxon_social_license_revoked_retina_0.jpg?itok=_e0MaZUq\" alt=\"Exxon social license revoked\" width=\"602\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>With the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/2015\/11\/18\/earth-smashes-monthly-heat-record-with-october-as-hottest-month-of-the-year.html\" target=\"_blank\">hottest October in world history recorded recently<\/a>, a slew of advocacy groups have<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2015\/11\/19\/heat-building-exxon-multiple-probes-explore-climate-cover\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0delivered 360,000 petition signatures<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Department of Justice, calling for a probe of petrochemical industry giant ExxonMobil&#8217;s history of funding climate change denial despite what the company knew about climate\u00a0science.<\/p>\n<p>The groups ranging from 350.org, Food and Watch Watch, Climate Parents, Moms Clean Air Force, The Nation, Sierra Club and others\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/act.350.org\/sign\/exxon_DOJ\" target=\"_blank\">have asked\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">DOJ<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to investigate what ExxonMobil knew about climate change and when the company knew it, juxtaposing that insider knowledge, exposed by both\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/15092015\/Exxons-own-research-confirmed-fossil-fuels-role-in-global-warming\" target=\"_blank\">InsideClimate News<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.latimes.com\/exxon-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>, with the climate change denial campaign it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.exxonsecrets.org\/html\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">funded both in the past<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/11\/13\/it-s-not-just-what-exxonknew-it-s-what-exxondid-next\" target=\"_blank\">through to the present<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s right: decades before climate change became a hotly debated political issue, the biggest oil company in the world was doing cutting-edge research into just what was causing it and how dangerous it might be,\u201d reads the petition, pointing back to the research the company did on climate change\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/content\/Exxon-The-Road-Not-Taken\" target=\"_blank\">dating back to the 1970&#8217;s and 1980&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Exxon chose to protect their profits over the planet, and proceeded to cover up their findings for nearly forty years.,\u201d it continues. \u201cThey hid the work of their own scientists, while financing an elaborate network of climate-denial think tanks, organizations, and\u00a0politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMight Get Away With\u00a0It\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The petition also says that while it&#8217;s unsurprising ExxonMobil committed such a deed, what&#8217;s scary is that in the legal sphere \u201cthey just might get away with\u00a0it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That concern by the groups does not arise out of a\u00a0vacuum.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: coal giant Peabody Energy recently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/www.climateinvestigations.org\/peabody_energy_investigtion_in_late_stages_new_york_attorney_general_probe\" target=\"_blank\">got off the hook<\/a>\u00a0in the aftermath of a New York State Attorney General Office investigation by merely amending some line-items in its corporate securities filings with the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>Securities and Exchange Commission (<span class=\"caps\">SEC<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Groups Hand 360,000 Signatures to Justice Department Calling for &#8220;Exxon Knew&#8221;
