Exploiting Emotions About Paris to Blame Snowden, Distract from Actual Culprits Who Empowered ISIS<\/a><\/h3>\n

Whistleblowers are\u00a0always<\/em>\u00a0accused of helping America\u2019s enemies (top Nixon aides\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0Daniel Ellsberg of being a Soviet spy and causing the deaths of Americans with his leak); it\u2019s just the tactical playbook that\u2019s automatically used. So it\u2019s of course unsurprising that\u00a0ever since Edward Snowden\u2019s whistleblowing enabled newspapers around the world to report on secretly implemented programs of mass surveillance, he has been accused\u00a0by \u201cofficials\u201d and their various media allies<\/a>\u00a0of Helping The Terrorists\u2122.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Still, I was a bit surprised just by how quickly and\u00a0blatantly \u2014<\/em>\u00a0how shamelessly \u2014\u00a0some of them jumped\u00a0to exploit\u00a0the emotions prompted by\u00a0the carnage in\u00a0France\u00a0to blame Snowden: doing so\u00a0literally\u00a0as the bodies still lay on the streets of Paris. At first, the\u00a0tawdry exploiters were the likes of\u00a0crazed ex-intelligence\u00a0officials<\/a>\u00a0(former CIA chief James Woolsey, who\u00a0once said<\/a>\u00a0Snowden \u201cshould be hanged by his neck until he is dead\u201d and now has\u00a0deep ties to private NSA contractors<\/a>,\u00a0along with\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2013obsessed<\/a>\u00a0Robert Baer<\/a>);\u00a0former Bush\/Cheney apparatchiks<\/a>\u00a0(ex-White House spokesperson and current Fox personality Dana Perino);\u00a0right-wing polemicists<\/a>\u00a0fired from\u00a0BuzzFeed<\/em>\u00a0for plagiarism; and\u00a0obscure\u00a0Fox News<\/em>\u00a0comedians<\/a>\u00a0(Perino\u2019s co-host). So it was worth ignoring\u00a0save for<\/a>\u00a0the occasional\u00a0Twitter retort<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But now we\u2019ve entered the inevitable \u201cU.S. Officials Say\u201d stage of the \u201creporting\u201d on the Paris attack \u2014\u00a0i.e., journalists mindlessly and uncritically repeat\u00a0whatever U.S. officials whisper in their ear about what happened. So now\u00a0credible news sites<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0regurgitating the claim<\/a>\u00a0that the Paris Terrorists were enabled by Snowden leaks \u2014\u00a0based on no evidence or specific proof of any kind, needless to say, but just the unverified, obviously self-serving assertions of government officials.\u00a0But much of the U.S. media loves to repeat rather than scrutinize what government officials tell them to say. So now this accusation has become widespread and is thus worth examining\u00a0with just some of the actual evidence.<\/p>\n
