The Berlin Wall\u2014-the symbol of a century of state tyranny, grotesque mass\u00a0warfare and the nuclear sword of Damocles hanging over the planet\u2014-had come tumbling down on November 9, 1989.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p>It was only a matter of time before the economically decrepit Soviet regime would be no more, and that the world\u2019s vast arsenal of weapons and nuclear bombs could be dismantled.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, shortly thereafter according to Gorbachev,\u00a0President George H.W.\u00a0Bush and Secretary Baker promised\u00a0that NATO would not be expanded by \u201cas much as a thumb\u2019s width further to the East\u201d in return for acquiescing to the reunification of Germany.<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0with its\u00a0\u201cmission accomplished\u201d there was no logical reason why NATO should not have been disbanded in parallel with the Warsaw Pact\u2019s demise, and for an obvious and overpowering reason: On November 9, 1989 there were no material military threats to US security\u00a0anywhere on the planet outside of the\u00a0suddenly vanishing\u00a0front line\u00a0of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, however, there was a\u00a0virulent threat to peace still lurking on the Potomac. The great general and president, Dwight Eisenhower, had called it the \u201cmilitary-industrial complex\u201d in his farewell address,\u00a0but that memorable phrase\u00a0had been abbreviated by his speechwriters, who\u00a0deleted the word \u201ccongressional\u201d in a gesture of comity to the legislative branch.<\/p>\n<p>So restore Ike\u2019s deleted reference to the pork barrels and Sunday afternoon\u00a0warriors of Capitol Hill\u00a0and toss in the legions of beltway busybodies that constituted the civilian branches of the cold war armada (CIA, State, AID etc.)\u00a0and the circle would have been complete.\u00a0It constituted\u00a0the most awesome machine of warfare and imperial hegemony since the Roman legions bestrode\u00a0most of the civilized world.<\/p>\n<p>In a word, the\u00a0real threat to peace circa 1990\u00a0was that\u00a0<strong><em>Pax Americana<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>would not go away\u00a0quietly in the night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blowback\u2014\u2013The Washington War Party\u2019s Folly Comes Home To Roost Exactly 26 years ago\u00a0last week, peace was breaking out in a manner that the world had not experienced since June 1914.
