Snowden Vindicated as Judge Shuts Down NSA Bulk Spying in Epic Smackdown<\/a><\/h3>\n

On Monday, a federal judge ordered a halt to the NSA\u2019s bulk metadata collection program in a reiteration and confirmation of a previous ruling that found the practice\u00a0\u201cunconstitutional\u201d<\/i>\u2014 and even\u00a0\u201cOrwellian.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis court simply cannot, and will not, allow the government to trump the Constitution merely because it suits the exigencies of the moment,\u201d<\/i><\/b>stated Washington, D.C. District Court Judge Richard Leon in his mordant\u00a043-page ruling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Edward Snowden immediately\u00a0hailed the decision<\/a>, pointing out significant passages from the court to his millions of Twitter followers. Of particular importance \u2014 and, indeed, at the heart of both known and potentially unknown domestic spy programs \u2014 remains the impossible reckoning between Fourth Amendment protections and the government\u2019s claims of a national security imperative.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoved by whatever momentary evil has aroused their fears, officials \u2014 perhaps even supported by a majority of citizens \u2014 may be tempted to conduct searches that sacrifice the liberty of each citizen to assuage the perceived evil. But the Fourth Amendment rests on the principle that a true balance between the individual and society depends on the recognition of \u2018the right to be let [sic] alone \u2014\u00a0<\/i>the most comprehensive of rights<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and the right most valued by civilized men,\u2019\u201d<\/i>\u00a0the ruling stated, with emphasis added by Snowden.<\/p>\n

In another tweet, the whistleblower summarized the ruling:\u00a0\u201cJudge rejects government claim that so long as you aren\u2019t targeted individually, dragnet searches of your life are OK.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
