CIA, Saudis To Give “Select” Syrian Militants Weapons Capable Of Downing Commercial Airliners<\/a><\/h3>\n

Wednesday brought a veritable smorgasbord of \u201cnew\u201d information about the Russian passenger jet which fell out of the sky above the Sinai Peninsula last weekend.<\/p>\n

First there was an audio recording from ISIS\u2019 Egyptian affiliate reiterating that they did indeed \u201cdown\u201d the plane. Next, the ISIS home office in Raqqa (or Langley or Hollywood)\u00a0released a video<\/a>\u00a0of five guys sitting in the front yard congratulating their Egyptian \u201cbrothers\u201d on the accomplishment.<\/p>\n

Then the UK\u00a0grounded air traffic<\/a>\u00a0from Sharm el-Sheikh noting that the plane \u201cmay well\u201d have had an \u201cexplosive device\u201d on board.<\/p>\n

Finally, US media lit up with reports that\u00a0according to<\/a>\u00a0American \u201cintelligence\u201d sources, ISIS was probably responsible for the crash.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the investigation, one question that\u2019s continually come up is whether militants could have shot the plane down. Generally speaking, the contention that ISIS (or at least IS Sinai) has the technology and\/or the expertise to shoot down a passenger jet flying at 31,000 feet has been discredited by \u201cexperts\u201d and\u00a0infrared satellite<\/a>\u00a0imagery.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s nothing the CIA can\u2019t fix.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the Pentagon now set to deploy US ground troops to Syria (and indeed they may already be there, operating near Latakia no less), Washington is reportedly bolstering the supply lines to \u201cmoderate\u201d anti-regime forces at the urging of (guess who) the Saudis and Erdogan.<\/p>\n

Incredibly, some of the weapons being passed out may be shoulder-fire man-portable air-defense systems, or Manpads, capable of hitting civilian aircraft.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But don\u2019t worry, those will only be given to\u00a0\u201cselect rebels.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Here\u2019s\u00a0more from WSJ<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The U.S. and its regional allies agreed to increase shipments of weapons and other supplies to help moderate Syrian rebels hold their ground and challenge the intervention of Russia and Iran on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, U.S. officials and their counterparts in the region said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
