China Turns Up the Rhetoric Against the West – NYTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

BEIJING \u2014 Even as his government was making\u00a0red-carpet plans<\/a>\u00a0to host President Obama this week, the Chinese president,\u00a0Xi Jinping<\/a>, praised a young blogger whose writing is best known here for its anti-American vitriol.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0one widely circulated essay<\/a>\u00a0published by state news outlets titled \u201cNine Knockout Blows in America\u2019s Cold War Against China,\u201d the blogger, Zhou Xiaoping, argued that American culture was \u201ceroding the moral foundation and self-confidence of the Chinese people.\u201d He compared unfavorable American news coverage of China to Hitler\u2019s treatment of the Jews. In another essay, he said the West had \u201cslaughtered and robbed\u201d China and other civilizations since the 17th century, and was now \u201cbrainwashing\u201d it.<\/p>\n

Mr. Xi, speaking at a forum last month aimed at tightening political control of the arts, said the blogger exhibited \u201cpositive energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

His embrace of Mr. Zhou, who has been hailed by propaganda officials but widely mocked by scholars here, is just the latest sign of rising anti-Western sentiment, bordering on xenophobia, that has emanated from the highest levels of the Communist Party and sent a chill through Chinese civil society and academia.<\/p>\n
