The same has now happened with the leak of documents about President Obama\u2019s drone war, writes John Hanrahan.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>For that slice of the American public that still depends heavily on major daily newspapers as their main source of news, they might not even know that the on-line publication\u00a0<em>The Intercept<\/em>\u00a0has published a package of alarming drone-assassination articles based on secret military documents provided by an anonymous intelligence whistleblower.<\/p>\n<p>These \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/drone-papers\/the-assassination-complex\/\"><u>Drone Papers<\/u><\/a>\u201d show, among other disclosures, that the U.S. government has been lying about the number of civilian deaths caused by drone strikes in Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia. For every targeted individual assassinated, another five or six non-targeted individuals are killed \u2014 giving the lie to the Obama administration\u2019s long-standing claims of careful, precision killing of specific targets in order to avoid killing civilians.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/predatordronemissile.jpg?03f06c\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7121\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/predatordronemissile.jpg?03f06c\" alt=\"A Predator drone firing a missile.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The Intercept<\/em>, relying on a cache of slides provided to it by its whistleblower source, posted its package of eight articles on Oct. 15, 2015. Among those picking up on the stories was the\u00a0<em>Huffington Post<\/em>\u00a0(which ran excerpts), and other outlets \u2014 including\u00a0<em>The Guardian, Newsweek, New York Magazine, NPR,\u00a0<\/em>the<em>\u00a0PBS NewsHour, CNN<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 which generally cited some of\u00a0<em>The Intercept<\/em>\u2019s main findings or speculated about a \u201csecond [Edward] Snowden\u201d coming forth as a national security whistleblower.<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, the premier mainstream publications that carry influence beyond their own immediate readership in setting the nation\u2019s news agenda \u2014\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 have carried virtually nothing about what is in these explosive documents, which cover the 2011-2013 period.
