{"id":14177,"date":"2015-11-05T07:43:34","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T12:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14177"},"modified":"2015-11-05T07:43:34","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T12:43:34","slug":"u-k-government-proposes-more-not-less-electronic-snooping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=14177","title":{"rendered":"U.K. Government Proposes More, Not Less, Electronic Snooping"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"Post-header\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-header-grid\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3\">\n<div class=\"Post-header-row\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-header-block\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0.1\">\n<div data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0.1.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-title-block\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0.1.0.1\">\n<h3 class=\"Post-title\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0.1.0.1.0\"><a class=\"Post-title-link active\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/11\/04\/u-k-government-proposes-more-not-less-electronic-snooping\/\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.0.3.0.1.0.1.0.0\">U.K. Government Proposes More, Not Less, Electronic Snooping<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Post-body\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-outer\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1\">\n<div class=\"GridContainer\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0\">\n<div class=\"GridRow\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0\">\n<div class=\"Post-content-block-inner\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0\">\n<div class=\"PostContent\" data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0.1\">\n<div data-reactid=\".ti.1.0.1.1.0.0.0.0.1.$p-0\">\n<p>Two years after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed the vast reach of U.S. and U.K. surveillance, the U.S. Congress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/06\/02\/one-small-step-toward-post-snowden-surveillance-reform-one-giant-step-congress\/\">rolled back<\/a>\u00a0the most manifestly unconstitutional element: the bulk collection of domestic phone data.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. government, on Wednesday, chose to double down instead.<\/p>\n<p>The newly unveiled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/473770\/Draft_Investigatory_Powers_Bill.pdf\">text\u00a0<\/a>of what critics are calling a proposed \u201cSnooper\u2019s Charter\u201d or \u201cHacker\u2019s License\u201d would explicitly authorize the bulk collection of domestic data, require telecommunications companies to store records of websites visited by every citizen for 12 months for access by the government, approve the government\u2019s right to hack into and bug computers and phones, severely restrict the ability of citizens to raise questions about secret surveillance warrants or evidence obtained through bulk surveillance presented in court, and oblige companies to assist in bypassing encryption.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister David Cameron\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2015\/jan\/12\/david-cameron-pledges-anti-terror-law-internet-paris-attacks-nick-clegg\">has said<\/a>\u00a0terrorists should have no \u201csafe space\u201d to communicate online, and Britain\u2019s Home Office \u2014 charged with law enforcement, prisons, and border security \u2014 has presented in recent years several draft bills with that idea in mind.<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom\u2019s Home Secretary Theresa May, who is similar to the secretary of state for the U.S.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/home-secretary-publication-of-draft-investigatory-powers-bill\">insisted<\/a>\u00a0that the engines of Britain\u2019s spy agencies would hum along as usual \u2014 just more efficiently, and with even more oversight, if the law passed. She answered questions from Parliament about the bill in the House of Commons in London on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>There are some new limits in\u00a0the bill. For example, if police wanted to use phone call information to try and track down a journalist\u2019s source, those efforts would now have to be approved by a judicial commissioner.
