After all, separatists exchanging fire with government forces and\/or far-right \u201cvolunteer\u201d battalions every couple of days against a dreary backdrop of rundown Eastern European towns isn\u2019t nearly as exciting as Sukhois dropping bombs on sword-waving desert bandits and so, Ukraine\u2019s crisis has gradually receded into the background.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, it\u2019s important to remember that one of the principal reasons for deteriorating relations between Moscow and the West is the conflict in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Russian \u201caggression\u201d in the region has triggered a series of snap drills on NATO\u2019s part, the most amusing of which involved\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-06-21\/nato-conducts-rehearsal-ukraine-siege-mapping-all-nato-drills-near-russia-2014\">a set of war games<\/a>\u00a0centered around the capture of a fictional Ukrainian separatist leader called \u201cBirdman\u201d who lived in a shack in the forest. But all humor aside, NATO has also moved to beef up its capabilities near Russia\u2019s border, as the US\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-06-15\/russia-condemns-aggressive-us-weapons-deployment-will-send-troops-protect-border\">prepares to place heavy weapons<\/a>\u00a0in Poland and the Pentagon\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-09-19\/us-readies-battle-plans-baltic-war-russia-report\">runs simulations<\/a>\u00a0to determine who would win a Balkan battle.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with tensions running higher than ever thanks to the escalating situation in the Mid-East,\u00a0<strong>NATO is set to bolster its Eastern flank\u00a0<\/strong>to guard against what the West imagines is an imminent Russian invasion.
