NATO Looks To Station Thousands Of Troops On Border With Russia<\/a><\/h3>\n

Russia\u2019s dramatic intervention in Syria has served to push the conflict in Ukraine (a country that is\u00a0now partially governed<\/a>by Star Wars characters) to the back of the world\u2019s collective mind. After all, separatists exchanging fire with government forces and\/or far-right \u201cvolunteer\u201d battalions every couple of days against a dreary backdrop of rundown Eastern European towns isn\u2019t nearly as exciting as Sukhois dropping bombs on sword-waving desert bandits and so, Ukraine\u2019s crisis has gradually receded into the background.<\/p>\n

That said, it\u2019s important to remember that one of the principal reasons for deteriorating relations between Moscow and the West is the conflict in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed, Russian \u201caggression\u201d in the region has triggered a series of snap drills on NATO\u2019s part, the most amusing of which involved\u00a0a set of war games<\/a>\u00a0centered around the capture of a fictional Ukrainian separatist leader called \u201cBirdman\u201d who lived in a shack in the forest. But all humor aside, NATO has also moved to beef up its capabilities near Russia\u2019s border, as the US\u00a0prepares to place heavy weapons<\/a>\u00a0in Poland and the Pentagon\u00a0runs simulations<\/a>\u00a0to determine who would win a Balkan battle.<\/p>\n

Now, with tensions running higher than ever thanks to the escalating situation in the Mid-East,\u00a0NATO is set to bolster its Eastern flank\u00a0<\/strong>to guard against what the West imagines is an imminent Russian invasion. Here\u2019s\u00a0WSJ with more<\/a>:<\/p>\n

NATO countries are discussing increasing the number of troops stationed in members bordering Russia and putting them under formal alliance command<\/strong>, part of a new effort to deter aggression from Moscow, according to diplomats and military officers.<\/em><\/div>\n

Under one plan, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would have a battalion in Poland and each of the three Baltic states\u2014roughly 800 to 1,000 soldiers in each unit.\u00a0<\/strong>A more modest version would have a single NATO battalion in the area.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
