{"id":13858,"date":"2015-10-27T06:36:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-27T11:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13858"},"modified":"2015-10-27T06:36:21","modified_gmt":"2015-10-27T11:36:21","slug":"worries-build-among-investors-over-oil-and-gas-industrys-exposure-to-water-and-climate-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13858","title":{"rendered":"Worries Build Among Investors Over Oil and Gas Industry\u2019s Exposure to Water and Climate Risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/10\/26\/worries-build-among-investors-over-oil-and-gas-industry-s-exposure-water-and-climate-risks\" target=\"_blank\">Worries Build Among Investors Over Oil and Gas Industry\u2019s Exposure to Water and Climate Risks<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to financial risks surrounding water, there is one industry that, according to a new report, is both among the most exposed to these risks and the least transparent to investors about them: the oil and gas\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>This year, 1,073 of the world\u2019s largest publicly listed companies faced requests from institutional investors concerned about the companies\u2019 vulnerability to water-related risks that they disclose their plans for adapting and responding to issues like drought or water\u00a0shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Many of those companies responded by reporting their information to a group called\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CDP<\/span>, which works with over 800 institutional investors with assets of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">US<\/span>$95 trillion to push for corporate transparency. But in the oil and gas industry, the compliance rate was just over half the average, with only 22% of companies providing information,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en-US\/Pages\/events\/2015\/water\/global-water-report-2015.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"caps\">CDP<\/span>\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a concern for investors,\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CDP<\/span>\u00a0wrote, because their data showed that roughly two thirds of oil and gas companies say they are vulnerable to water risks \u2014 and those risks are not just speculative risks to keep an eye on for some future\u00a0time.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of the oil and gas companies who responded report that their bottom line has already suffered due to \u201cwater-related challenges\u201d over the past year, placing the industry in the ranks of the most vulnerable, the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CDP<\/span>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Just as oil was to the 20th century, water is fast becoming the defining resource of the 21st century,\u201d said Cate Lamb, head of water at\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">CDP<\/span>. \u201cUnfortunately however, unlike oil, there is no replacement for\u00a0water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The growing risks of unaddressed climate change are beginning to draw the attention of the financial community, with investors, central bankers and global economic institutions increasingly questioning what impacts shifting weather patterns might have on business as we know\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Worries Build Among Investors Over Oil and Gas Industry\u2019s Exposure to Water and Climate Risks When it comes to financial risks surrounding water, there is one industry that, according to a new report, is both among the most exposed to these risks and the least transparent to investors about them: the oil and gas\u00a0industry.
