Born in Oklahoma, his education ended with his graduation from high school. Which didn\u2019t stop him from becoming a multi-billionaire by building his own oil and gas fracking company, Continental Resources \u2014 a company that bills itself as<a href=\"http:\/\/www.contres.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0\u201cAmerica\u2019s Oil\u00a0Champion.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So for a self-made man from oil country, it wasn\u2019t surprising to see a PowerPoint slide with the bullet points \u201cRigs, Rednecks, and Royalties\u201d during\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/conference\/2015\/pdf\/presentations\/hamm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">his presentation<\/a>this June at the annual Energy Information Administration conference in Washington,\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">D.C.<\/span>\u00a0Although when he referred to the oil producing sections of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0as \u201cCowboyistan\u201d it didn\u2019t get the laugh he was probably\u00a0expecting.<\/p>\n<p>What was a bit surprising was to see him touting the work of Columbia and Harvard to support his argument to lift the ban on exporting crude oil produced in the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">US<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>There have been a dozen studies so far, everyone of them come[sic] out with the same thing &#8211; lower gasoline prices\u2026.These are not folks who write about our industry all the time. We\u2019re talking Columbia, we\u2019re talking\u00a0Harvard\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hamm\u2019s attempt to distance Columbia and Harvard from the oil industry was probably a clever tactic and not based on ignorance. Hamm has probably spent more time in\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">D.C.<\/span>\u00a0this year than some members of\u00a0Congress.<\/p>\n<p>From the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EIA<\/span>\u00a0conference to multiple appearances before\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/agriculture.house.gov\/press-release\/agriculture-committee-holds-hearing-examine-positive-impacts-lifting-oil-export-ban\" target=\"_blank\">congressional committees<\/a>, Hamm has been pushing to get the oil export ban\u00a0lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, he is wrong to say that Columbia and Harvard don\u2019t write about the oil industry all of the\u00a0time.<\/p>\n<p>At Columbia University there is a rather new division of the school that does just that called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/energypolicy.columbia.edu\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\">Center on Global Energy Policy<\/a>(<span class=\"caps\">CGEP<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ivy League Universities Pushing Oil Industry Agenda With No Accountability Harold Hamm isn\u2019t the kind of guy you\u2019d expect to be name dropping Ivy League schools.
