Expert on the economic impacts of climate change says the stakes have never been higher for radical action to be agreed at the Paris summit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LONDON, 21 October, 2015<\/em>\u00a0\u2212 The lead author of the\u00a02006 Stern Review<\/a>\u00a0on the economics of climate change says that although there will be an agreement at the\u00a0UN climate conference in Paris<\/a>\u00a0in December, it\u2019s what happens afterwards that is crucial.<\/p>\n

Professor Nicholas Stern warns: \u201cWhatever way we look at it, the action we need to take is immense.\u201d<\/p>\n

If governments delay taking decisive measures to halt greenhouse gas emissions, he is convinced that a tipping point on climate will be reached. \u201cIn Paris, we need recognition of what we need to do \u2212 and how radical that change will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Awareness of urgency<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stern, chair of the UK\u2019s\u00a0Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0and a former chief economist at the World Bank, will be involved in the Paris negotiations.<\/p>\n

He told a packed audience at Oxford University that, on the plus side, there is now a much greater willingness to work towards a meaningful agreement on climate change.<\/p>\n

Generally, there is far more awareness of the urgency of the issue. China and the US are not \u2013 as in the past \u2013 \u201cdancing around each other\u201d, but co-operating on how to bring down emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very optimistic about what we can do. That\u2019s not the same as saying I\u2019m optimistic about what we will do\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Stern said that during talks coinciding with the\u00a0state visit to the UK by China\u2019s President<\/a>, Xi Jinping, Chinese officials said the country\u2019s emissions would peak by 2025 and then start declining. Previously, China said it would not reach peak emissions till 2030.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very optimistic about what we can do,\u201d Stern said. \u201cThat\u2019s not the same as saying I\u2019m optimistic about what we will do.\u201d<\/p>\n
