Family survival: 5 tips for distributing gear<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"Family<\/a>Ever since I posted my article on\u00a0my personal bug out bag<\/a>, I\u2019ve gotten quite a few questions on how to pack gear and what people should choose but one of the most common is how to share gear with your partner\/kids\/wife etc so I figured I\u2019d write something up.<\/p>\n

Sorry that I haven\u2019t written in quite a while but I\u2019m knee-deep in planning\/writing a novel. It\u2019ll be about a year or two before it\u2019s finished but I think a lot of you will like it. It\u2019s kind of part\u00a0Brave New World<\/a>, part\u00a0Jericho<\/a>, and a whole lot of awesome. Also, I\u2019ve been knee-deep in organizing my motorcycle for some extended camping trips and travel where I can do some reviews on some of the gear I\u2019ve picked up lately, including a vintage 1960\u2019s\u00a0Hudson Bay 4-point wool blanket<\/a>\u00a0and several other things.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s assume you\u2019re married and have a kid so there are three of you, each with varying skills and abilities. Here are the key points:<\/p>\n

1) Have redundant survival capabilities<\/h2>\n

Just as with the critical things in your individual survival\/bug out bag, you need to make sure you have redundant capabilities (not necessarily redundant gear). I go into some detail on this in\u00a0The \u2018Two is one and one is none\u2019 fallacy<\/a>\u00a0so you may want to read that one too. Essentially, each bag should be able to allow you to cover all your survival bases\u00a0but not all gear works in every scenario, so having different ways to do the same thing just may come in handy.<\/p>\n

For example, you may be carrying a\u00a0Trangia alcohol stove<\/a>\u00a0in one pack. They\u2019re super portable and pretty capable little stoves (I have one), but they require alcohol (the best I\u2019ve found is\u00a0Yellow Heet<\/a>\u00a0but Everclear can be used in inclosed spaces and for wounds etc \u2013 check out\u00a0this post<\/a>\u00a0for more fuel ideas).<\/p>\n
