New research has identified at least 37 \u201ctipping points\u201d that would serve as evidence that climate change has happened \u2013 and happened abruptly in one particular region.<\/p>\n<p>And 18 of them could happen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alphagalileo.org\/ViewItem.aspx?ItemId=157382&amp;CultureCode=en\" target=\"_blank\">even before the world warms by an average of 2\u00b0C<\/a>,\u00a0 the proposed \u201csafe limit\u201d for global warming.<\/p>\n<p>Weather is what happens, climate is what people grow to expect from the weather. So climate change, driven by global warming as a consequence of rising carbon dioxide levels, in response to more than a century of fossil fuel combustion, could be \u2013 for many people \u2013 gradual, imperceptible and difficult to identify immediately.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/oes\/about\/staff\/ssd1y11.page\" target=\"_blank\">Sybren Drijfhout<\/a>, of the University of Southampton in the UK and his collaborators in France, the Netherlands and Germany, are not so sure.<\/p>\n<p>They report in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/10\/07\/1511451112.abstract\" target=\"_blank\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a>\u00a0that they \u201cscreened\u201d the massive ensemble of climate models that inform the most recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and found evidence of abrupt regional changes in the ocean, the sea ice, the snow cover, the permafrost and in the terrestrial biosphere that could happen as average global temperatures reached a certain level.<\/p>\n<p>The models did not all simulate the same outcomes, but most of them did predict one or more abrupt regional shifts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate changes can kick in below 2\u00b0C limit Extensive melting of the snow on the Tibetan plateau could be a tipping point.
