{"id":13295,"date":"2015-10-12T09:53:52","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T14:53:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13295"},"modified":"2015-10-12T09:53:52","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T14:53:52","slug":"how-cnn-shapes-political-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13295","title":{"rendered":"How CNN Shapes Political Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/10\/11\/how-cnn-shapes-political-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">How CNN Shapes Political Debate<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"entry-meta\"><strong>Exclusive:<\/strong>\u00a0CNN was happy to add a right-wing questioner for the Republican debate but won\u2019t add a progressive for the Democratic debate, another sign of how the \u201cmainstream media\u201d shapes what\u2019s acceptable in political discussion, a lesson that ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern has learned from personal experience.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>CNN, the sponsor of Tuesday\u2019s debate among Democratic presidential candidates, has gone to extraordinary lengths to avoid being sullied with the stigma of \u201cliberal bias.\u201d The four CNN journalists handpicked to do the questioning have carefully protected themselves from such a charge.<\/p>\n<p>As Jeff Cohen noted Friday in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2015\/10\/09\/cnns-double-standards-on-debates\/\"><u>CNN\u2019s Double Standards on Debates,<\/u><\/a>\u201d CNN made a point of including a bona fide right-winger in the Republican debate but \u201cis not planning to include a single progressive advocate among its panel of four questioners \u2026 CNN presents as neutral: CNN\u2019s [Dana] Bash and three CNN anchors (Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, and Juan Carlos Lopez of CNN en Espanol.)\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/wolf.blog_.photo_.jpg?55ac53\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3068\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/wolf.blog_.photo_.jpg?55ac53\" alt=\"CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer\" width=\"188\" height=\"106\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The significance is that while a person from the Right or Left might break out of\u00a0the usual frame of these debates, \u201cmainstream\u201d panelists can be counted on to ask predictable queries with maybe a \u201cgotcha\u201d question or two tossed in to show how \u201ctough\u201d the reporter can be.
