Ranking the Peasants \u2013 China Introduces Orwellian \u201cCitizen Scores\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n

The following is extraordinarily creepy and disturbing. It\u2019s also extremely clever, from a jackbooted, fascist thug\u00a0perspective. When massive censorship itself isn\u2019t enough\u2026<\/p>\n

China\u2019s plan to control the hearts, minds and internet connections of its citizens continues unimpeded. That\u2019s the great thing about authoritarian regimes: rollout of mandatory programs is usually only a problem of logistics, not opposition.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Chinese government has mandated a rating system for all of its connected citizens. It looks like a credit rating but goes much deeper than just tying a measurement of financial risk to a number. It\u2019s a way of defining who someone in terms of the government\u2019s desires and aims.\u00a0And its desires aren\u2019t all that honorable<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Everybody is measured by a score between 350 and 950, which is linked to their national identity card. While currently supposedly voluntary, the government has announced that it will be mandatory by 2020\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

In addition to measuring your ability to pay, as in the United States, the scores serve as a measure of political compliance.<\/strong>Among the things that will hurt a citizen\u2019s score are posting political opinions without prior permission, or posting information that the regime does not like, such as about the Tiananmen Square massacre that the government carried out to hold on to power, or the Shanghai stock market collapse.<\/i><\/p>\n

This is where all the government\u2019s moves towards\u00a0greater control<\/a>\u00a0of the internet comes to fruition.<\/strong>\u00a0To keep \u201cscore,\u201d the government needs to tie IDs to online activity. Keeping the internet within the\u00a0government\u2019s walls<\/a>\u00a0makes it that much easier. But it\u2019s not just online activity that will affect \u201ccitizen scores.\u201d It\u2019s almost every aspect of their lives.<\/em><\/p>\n

Most disheartening is the fact that many citizens seem to view higher scores as status symbols.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
