{"id":13140,"date":"2015-10-08T06:18:08","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T11:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13140"},"modified":"2015-10-08T06:19:02","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T11:19:02","slug":"when-the-aristocracy-leaves-the-commoners-in-the-dust-the-empire-is-doomed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=13140","title":{"rendered":"When the Aristocracy Leaves the Commoners in the Dust, The Empire Is Doomed"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oftwominds.com\/blogoct15\/aristocracy-commoners10-15.html\" target=\"_blank\">When the Aristocracy Leaves the Commoners in the Dust, The Empire Is Doomed\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><i>We all know the barriers between the commoners and the Elite rise higher every year, despite the claims of the corporate media and the Power Elite aristocracy.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Historian Peter Turchin identified &#8220;the degree of solidarity felt between the commons and aristocracy&#8221; as a key ingredient of the Republic of Rome&#8217;s enormous success.<\/b>\u00a0Turchin calls this attribute of social structure\u00a0<i>vertical integration<\/i>, a term that usually refers to a corporation owning its supply chain.<\/p>\n<p><b>In Turchin&#8217;s meaning, it refers to the sense of purpose and identity shared by the top, middle and bottom of the wealth\/power pyramid.<\/b>\u00a0One measure of this<i>vertical integration<\/i>\u00a0is the degree of equality\/inequality between the commoners (shall we call this the lower 90% of American households by income?) and the Power Elite aristocracy (top .5%, or perhaps top .1%).<\/p>\n<p><b>The\u00a0<i>vertical integration<\/i>\u00a0of the Roman Republic&#8217;s social strata is striking.<\/b>\u00a0In his book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0452288193\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0452288193&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=charleshughsm-20&amp;linkId=5SB7PGXVREXQEDYI\" target=\"resource\">War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires<\/a>, Turchin tells this anecdote:<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;Roman historians of the later age stressed the modest way of life, even poverty of the leading citizens.
