Jubeil but claimed that Saudi Arabia is backing \u201cmoderate rebels\u201d in the civil war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Saudis are indeed backing \u2018moderate\u2019 rebels \u2014 if the Nusra Front, an al-Qaida affiliate is considered \u2018moderate\u2019. It is ostensibly allied with Saudi Arabia.) \u00a0With memories of Afghanistan in mind, Saudi Arabian officials are genuinely concerned about \u201cblowback,\u201d and for good reasons. A branch of Islamic State (aka: ISIS or ISIL) in Saudi Arabia has already carried out attacks in its northeastern, predominantly Shi\u2019ite province and against the Saudi government itself. Saudi officials are well aware that Islamic State, with its own roots in Saudi Wahhabism (an extreme form of fundamentalist Islam) the ruling family could come under attack, in part because of its close relationship to Washington.<\/p>\n<p>A February 2014 report by\u00a0<em>Reuters<\/em>\u00a0reported that Saudi Arabia had recently banned its citizens from fighting in \u2018foreign wars\u2019, promising 3-20 years imprisonment for violating this law. It also banned its citizens from sending material support to certain Jihadi groups fighting in Syria.
