When it comes to hot-button foreign issues such as Russia and Syria, too often Official Washington\u2019s opinions and hostile spin get propagated as fact on its news pages.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the Sept. 30 edition of the Times and its contrasting coverage of U.S. bombing in Afghanistan and Russian bombing in Syria. On Afghanistan, the paper\u2019s approach is factual:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/01\/world\/asia\/kunduz-afghanistan-taliban-fight.html\"><u>The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0story<\/u><\/a>\u00a0leads with \u201cAmerican warplanes bombarded Taliban-held territory around the Kunduz airport overnight, and Afghan officials said American Special Forces were rushed toward the fighting.\u201d Lacking much depth, the article does not address, much less question, U.S. motives, which by implication are simply to help beleaguered government forces resist Taliban advances in Kunduz and northern Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"image-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/645997.jpg?55ac53\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16005\" src=\"http:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/645997-300x200.jpg?55ac53\" alt=\"Russian President Vladimir Putin, following his address to the UN General Assembly on Sept. 28, 2015. (UN Photo) \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In contrast,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/01\/world\/europe\/russia-airstrikes-syria.html\"><u>the main\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0story<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on Russia\u2019s first bombing raids in Syria leads with an assumption of Russian motives related as fact: \u201cPresident\u00a0Vladimir V.
