Tech Company Censorship \u2013 Apple Bans App Cataloguing Every U.S. Drone Strike; Facebook Blocks Ad for \u201cNegativity\u201d<\/a><\/h3>\n

One thing I\u2019ve learned from my three and a half years of writing publicly on the internet, is you never know which posts are going to go viral. Nothing proves this point more than last week\u2019s post,\u00a0The UN Releases Plan to Push for Worldwide Internet Censorship<\/a><\/strong>. Although I certainly thought it was an important story, I never expected it to become the beast it did.<\/p>\n

The paragraph that really caught people\u2019s eye was the following:<\/p>\n

Under U.S. law \u2014 the law that, not coincidentally, governs most of the world\u2019s largest online platforms \u2014 intermediaries such as Twitter and Facebook generally can\u2019t be held responsible for what people do on them.\u00a0But the United Nations proposes both that social networks proactively police every profile and post,\u00a0and that government agencies only \u201clicense\u201d those who agree to do so.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Interestingly, it appears Apple wants to get ahead of the curve and begin censoring news the U.S. government might find embarrassing right away.<\/p>\n

As reported\u00a0by\u00a0Mic<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

Freelance journalist and data artist Josh Begley has been methodically recording U.S. military drone activity for years. Every week or so \u2014 whenever the strikes occur \u2014 Begley will post a news story from the\u00a0@dronestream<\/a>Twitter account, identifying when and where drone strikes have occurred before feeding the results into an app called\u00a0Metadata+.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Longtime Liberty Blitzkrieg readers will be familiar with \u201cDronestream,\u201d as I highlighted it all the way back in 2012 in the post:\u00a0The Kid Who Tweets Every Drone Strike<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now back to\u00a0Mic<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But on Sunday, Dronestream\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0that Metadata+, which sends out push notifications every time there is a U.S. drone strike, had been removed from the App Store after seven months of being openly available.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Apple still aspires to be a hub for serious news.\u00a0<\/b>It\u2019s\u00a0building tools like Apple News to help journalists and publishers reach new audiences.\u00a0But Apple\u2019s opaque filtering process shows that it may not be ready to decide for the public what kind of content we\u00a0should or shouldn\u2019t be exposed to.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
